Women like flowers. So do Vietnamese women. However, it doesn’t mean that you can give them any kind of flowers. Here are 5 flowers you should not give Vietnamese women.
#1. Chrysanthemums – Hoa cúc
It is commonly used at funerals, ancestor altars or graves.
#2. Tuberose – Hoa huệ
Another flower in the list is tuberose . It’s often placed at funerals, ancestor altars or shrines.
#3. Marigold – Hoa vạn thọ
The name of the flower is meaningful. Vạn means 10.000, represent “a lot” meaning. Thọ means longevity. Therefore, the flower’s meaning is permanence. The flowers is often used to decorate the Vietnamese houses during Tet holidays.
Nonetheless, it’s also used to put on graves when Vietnamese people visit their ancestor’s graves. Therefore, you shouldn’t give the flower to Vietnamese women.
#4. Gladiolus – Hoa lay ơn
Gladiolus is often put on ancestor altars.
#5. Wild sunflower – Hoa dã quỳ
Unlike the other flowers, wild sunflower isn’t put at funerals, ancestor altars, graves or shrines. You’re thinking as to why it appears in this list, aren’t you?
Well, just because of its Vietnamese name. Some Vietnamese like spoonerizing. “Dã quỳ” is spoonerized as “quỷ già” which means an old and ugly monster.🙃🙃🙃
