How to say hello in Vietnamese?
Hello means xin chào in Vietnamese. So, you can say: Xin chào when you wanna say hello in Vietnamese!
However, we, Vietnamese people, don’t say xin chào to each other when we meet. Here are ways Vietnamese people greet each other.
The Vietnamese young people often say hi or hello to greet each other.
Some Vietnamese people say chào anh (hi bro), chào chị (hi sister), chào ông (hi grandpa), ect. The pronoun will be changed, depending on the person you talk with. And commonly, the younger will say hi to the older first to show their respect to them.
Some add a question like: Bạn có khỏe không? (How are you?) after saying hi. We say “how are you?” when we haven’t met that person for a while.
For e.g: Suppose you haven’t met an elder man for a long time. Now, you’re back and encounter him, you say: Chào ông, ông khỏe không? (Hello grandpa, how are you?)
In addition, some Vietnamese people will use a question to greet each other. The most common questions are where you are going and what you’re doing.
- Where are you going? in Vietnamese is Đi đâu đó?
- What are you doing? in Vienamese is Đang làm gì đó?
Besides, Vietnamese people often make a question based on the action of the opposite people to greet them. For example: You’re in a movie theatre. You meet your friend. You say: You watch movie, don’t you? This is a way Vietnamese use to greet each other.
